Plot

A gumiho (nine-tailed fox) named Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook) abdicated his position as the mountain spirit of Baekdudaegan to search for the reincarnation of his one true love Ah-eum (Jo Bo-ah). He followed her soul up to the Samdo River and gave her the fox bead as her mark when she is reborn again. Meanwhile, his half-brother Lee Rang (Kim Bum) was left alone and the mountain unprotected as well. With its guardian gone, humans were able to set fire in the mountains, causing Rang to flee. As a result, he exacted revenge on human beings, even the innocent ones, through various killings. Yeon later reunited with Rang, only to execute the Afterlife Judges' order to punish Rang by death. Rang managed to survive this punishment through the help of a mysterious man. Since then, he developed a deep grudge against his brother for choosing Ah-eum over him and being the mountain's protector. On the other hand, Yeon enlisted his service under Taluipa (Kim Jung-nan) to eradicate supernatural beings that threaten the mortal world in exchange for Ah-eum's reincarnation. Throughout centuries, Yeon encountered several lookalikes of Ah-eum but they do not bear the fox bead.

In the present-day, Yeon lives in the city where he is being assisted by his loyal subject and fellow gumiho Goo Shin-joo (Hwang Hee). He continues his search and mission under Taluipa's orders. Rang, with the assistance of Ki Yoo-ri (Kim Yong-ji), continuously harms human beings as a way of pestering his brother. While working on a mission, Yeon met Nam Ji-ah (Jo Bo-ah), a smart and dauntless producer at TVC Station. Ji-ah resembles Ah-eum but does not seem to be her reincarnation at first. Due to this resemblance, Ji-ah was saved by Yeon when she was a child from a car accident that presumably killed her parents although no bodies were found. Ji-ah believes that her parents are still alive and Yeon is the only lead she has in finding them. Later on, it is revealed that she is Ah-eum's reincarnation when the fox bead appeared on her. Yeon swore to protect her at all costs so she could live longer in this lifetime.

The poster of the television series was unveiled by Lee Dong-wook and Jo Bo-ah on September 9, 2020, which was termed as "Rhapsody of intense affection".
